Brief Councillor Information Richard Ackers
I became a Grove Parish Councillor at the end of 2001, a role I have very much enjoyed giving me valuable insight into the issues affecting the people who live in Grove. I am particularly concerned to make sure that Grove receives the most benefits possible as a result of any new development and does not repeat the mistakes of the past. I am currently Chairman of the Leisure & Recreation committee that has responsibility for the Recreation Ground, Play Areas and other open spaces in the Village.

I came to Grove with my wife and son from Oxford in 2005 and once settled began to seek an active role in the community. Soon enough I was Chairman of Grove Challengers Football Club (2005-07) and dealing with the Parish Council. During this time I met many local residents and viewed first hand many of the facilities that other villages and towns have to offer local people, which started me thinking, “What happened to Grove”.
I decided to stand for election to the Parish Council in 2007, because I was becoming more concerned about local issues affecting so many of us. Having been elected I now serve on Full Council, Environmental Services and the Leisure and Recreational Committee’s. My purpose in doing so is simple, to do all I can to ensure that local residents views and concerns are heard and that we have the best possible for Grove and it’s residents.

My wife Noreen and I retired to Grove 9½ years ago, joining her sister and family who have lived happily in Wantage over 40 years. Presently I am the co-ordinator of our local Neighbourhood Watch and a serving member of the Wantage & Grove Neighbourhood Action Group. I have a keen interest in local environment matters, and am aware how much the antisocial behaviour of a few can damage the quality of life of the community as a whole. Such problems need to be tackled as a priority so that we can achieve clean footpaths and play areas and zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs abuse, litter and speeding cars. I am also interested in the Grove airfield housing development and the many associated issues.
I welcome the opportunity to become more involved in working to improve life in our community, through the parish council and to that end I serve on the Environmental Services and Planning Committees and also the Old Mill Hall Management Committee.

served us very well and wanting to return something back to Grove became a
councillor in '94. Since then I have served as chair of planning, 3 yrs
as council chair and now as vice-chair and a member of the district standards

Over the
last 26 years we have raised three boys in Grove and at various times during
their childhood I was Treasurer and then Chairman of the 2nd Grove
Scouts. Since 2003 I have been a Parish Councillor and serve on both the
Planning and Environmental Services Committees. I also represent the Parish on
the Grove Environment Trust and the Wantage Hospital Committee. I am
independent and hope to ensure, through the Parish Council, that the village
provides a safe and quality environment both for our boys and all the
residents.
I work as
an environmental manager in an international company; from which I hope to
bring my expertise to bear on major planning and environmental issues, such as
the Airfield Development where we need to both work with and challenge the
District Council.

I have lived in Grove for 42 years. In that time I have seen the village grow and change in many aspects. Having lived opposite the old milking sheds, which is now a housing estate, I am well aware of where the village has come from and look forward to being involved in how it will develop in the future. I have three children who have attended the local primary school, and participate fully in clubs run by the local community. I strongly believe that people who live in the community should become involved in the community and for this reason I am thoroughly enjoying being part of the Parish Council.
