Fairtrade in Grove

Grove Fairtrade Group is comprised of representatives from various organisations and churches in the village, who aim to raise awareness and promote Fairtrade in Grove.

What is Fairtrade? Fairtrade is an alternative approach to free trade, or ?conventional? international trade. It is a trading partnership that focuses on sustainable development for poorer producers. It seeks to do this by providing better trading conditions, raising awareness of their situation and campaigning.

The FAIRTRADE Mark above is an independent consumer label, which is displayed on Fairtrade products, and guarantees that those who have been involved in production have been treated fairly.Fairtrade does exactly what the Mark says – it guarantees a better deal for producers. For more information please visit the Fairtrade Foundation web site:? www.fairtrade.org.uk?

We are pleased to announce that we have?achieved Fairtrade Village status, which is a national scheme organised by the Fairtrade Foundation. There are various criteria which have to be met, including support from the local Council, and Grove Parish Council voted in 2003 to support Fairtrade, and use Fairtrade products at any functions or events. There are set targets for the number of retail and catering outlets offering Fairtrade products, which relate to the population size.Fortunately, because of the?number of outlets in Grove and the large population, we have now successfully met this criteria and achieved Fairtrade Village status.

Every year during Fairtrade Fortnight (first fortnight in March) we organise events, ranging from tasting stalls, to cake competitions, and in 2007 a very successful Fairtrade ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ style Competition was held in the Old Mill Hall.

Look out for the FAIRTRADE Mark on products when you go shopping in Grove ? they can be found in the Co-op and the Cornerstone Coffee shop, both in Savile Way, the Bay Tree Public House on the Denchworth Road and at the Tesco Express, and the Bottle Top Off-licence all?in Millbrook Square.??All major supermarkets stock some Fairtrade products now so they are easily available ? if you can?t see them just ask!
